How to Care for Succulents in Terrarium Containers

Caring for succulents in terrarium containers is one of the easiest ways to care for these plants. However, being easy to care for doesn’t mean succulents don’t need any care at all. Succulents in terrarium containers do have a few basic needs to ensure they’re happy and healthy. If you follow these three tips, you can’t go wrong.

The top two things to avoid, when growing succulents inside terrarium containers, are too much water and too much sun.

Too Much Water

So, how often do you water succulents? Let’s just say, succulents hate wet feet. They are a desert plant so they don’t need watering as often as other indoor plants. If they are left to sit in a terrarium with wet, boggy soil, they are at risk of suffering from root rot. A good rule of thumb to follow is to allow the soil to dry out between watering. This way, the succulent is getting enough water without drowning.

Another tip to keep your succulent healthy and thriving is to make sure your terrarium containers have good drainage. Most terrariums don’t have drainage holes and that’s why they have a thick layer of stones in the bottom. Since the water can’t escape, like in a regular pot with drainage holes, you really need to be mindful not to water too much in one go. A good watering rule to follow for terrariums is less rather than more. You can always give more water later, but it’s hard to take it away.

Too Much Sun

Although succulents love sun, it is possible they can get too much, especially when they are young. Too much sun will result in blemishes, burnt spots and a general sick, withered looking plant. If you suspect this is the case, move your plant to a spot that’s out of direct sunlight, but is still nice and bright.

Bear in mind that glass terrarium containers can often magnify the sun. This can cause the succulent to experience an extreme level of heat and light. The best advice is to monitor your new succulent terrariums until you find the perfect spot for them.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the sun’s strength is stronger at different times throughout year. You may need to move your terrariums to a new spot when it gets cooler or hotter.
